From Global Health Now website:

A study of Colombia’s largest family with inherited early-onset Alzheimer’s may lead to important advances in prevention. Supported by the NIH, the first-of-its-kind study will test the drug crenezumab on family members who are high risk but currently healthy.

The trial is possible in part because NIH’s Fogarty International Center and the National Institute on Aging have promoted neuroscience research and training at Colombia’s University of Antioquia for years. Neuroscientist Kenneth Kosik calls Alzheimer’s “just the tip of the iceberg.” Other large families in the Antioquia region could be studied for their inherited neurodegenerative conditions like Huntington’s, he says.
