Grandpa Jack’s Book -A Nonagenarian Minister’s Wit and Wisdom

Grandpa Jack's Book

A Nonagenarian Minister’s Wit and Wisdom

Times change, truth doesn’t.

My dad always said, “A great deal of good can be done if you don’t care who gets the credit.”  He knew that the most satisfying thing in life is the joy of unselfish service.

The price of choosing selfishness is that you give up deep satisfaction.

Grandpa Jack’s Book contains the wisdom he acquired during 90+ years of life.  It reflects his understanding of the world and how it has changed.  Most importantly, it contains the teaching he wanted to leave behind for his grandchildren for others’ grandchildren.

Grandpa Jacks’ insights are rooted both in his humanity and his years as a Methodist minister.  His central theme of the joy of service is inspiring as well as sustaining through turbulent times.  The profound truths he conveys address topics ranging from history, to democracy, to religion, education and the importance of reading and thinking.   He communicates them using personal stories and examples, interspersed with his favorite quotations.

This book was edited by one of Grandpa Jack’s granddaughters, Erin Williams.  As per one of his final wishes, she lovingly crafted the book from a series of notes, videotapes, cassettes, letters, and instructions.  The process of producing Grandpa Jack’s Book brought her closer to her grandfather, and caused her to reflect on her own understandings of the world and relationship with God.

Grandpa Jack is the father-in-law of GraceFul Care Founder, Pat Williams, and the grandfather-in-law of its President, Dan Flavin.  The editor, Erin, is Pat’s daughter, and Dan’s wife.
